Adler begins in Southern Germany, in the city of Bavaria, where he was born into a Jewish family in 1921. At the age of sixteen, his parents sent him alone to America to escape the Nazis. Although he initially didn't speak English, he quickly started high school in New York and soon enlisted in the U.S. Army. Kurt worked in the procurement department, learning about logistics and sourcing merchandise.
After the end of World War II, Adler ventured into the export business, utilizing contacts he had made during his stationing in Honolulu. As the business thrived and European economies started to recover, Kurt shifted gears towards importing.
In the 1950s, during a trade mission in post-war Europe, the German-born entrepreneur had an epiphany to import ornaments and Christmas decorations with a distinctive Germanic charm. At that time, most American families used simple round glass Christmas balls and tinsel garlands for their Christmas trees. Kurt introduced exquisite handcrafted angels from East and West Germany, which were highly appreciated in America. He expanded his Christmas collection with mouth-blown glass Christmas ornaments from Czechoslovakia and lights from Italy. Suddenly, America was adorned with festive decorations exuding a European flair.
