The History of the Snow Globe
Have you ever wondered about the origins of snow globes and who invented them? Viv! Christmas has done the research for you!
Erwin Perzy, an Austrian producer specializing in surgical instruments in the late 19th century, worked in a small house on the outskirts of Vienna, inventing a device to create brighter light for surgeons during operations. But just like many inventions, the snow globe was created by chance.
Perzy experimented with a glass globe filled with water and placed it in front of a candle. This increased the brightness, but the light was still insufficient. He tried adding various substances like tiny glitters and semolina to enhance light reflection. As the glitters and later semolina slowly settled, it reminded Perzy of falling snow.
However, a sphere with only snow wasn't particularly magical, right? Perzy experimented with melting tin and lead, then poured it into a miniature mold. His first snow globe featured the Mariazell Church. Perzy named his invention a ""Glass ball with snow effect"" and applied for a patent. The snowstorm effect was such a huge success that it led to the creation of the ""Original Wiener Schneekugelmanufaktur.""
Did you know that snow globes are also called waterglobe, snowstorm, snowdome, glass dome, snowball or glitter globe?
